Today was Pioneer Day at Caden's school. Pioneer Day is an annual event for just the second grade. It took place in a field at a farm owned by one of the families. It is organized by one of the teachers and was manned by over 90 parent volunteers. (WOW!!!)There were booths set up around the field with different pioneer activities. The booths were: quilting, stenciling, hoe cakes & butter, wood splitting, campfire cooking, leather works, basket weaving, candle making, corn husk dolls, pioneer toys and corn shucking. They also had bluegrass music, hayrides, story telling, pioneer school and games like potato sack and three-legged races. The booths were done in two shifts - morning and afternoon. (For example, in the morning a booth would be quilting and then in the afternoon it was pioneer toys.) There are six second grade classes and each class would spend 20 minutes at each booth. The whole thing was so well organized. I was amazed.
Caden absolutely loved it. Her favorite thing was the hoe cakes and butter-making booth because she got accolades for making the best butter. (Her's was just the right consistency.) She liked the taste of the hoe cakes, but said they needed syrup! I worked the quilting booth and have a new found appreciation for anyone who can hand-sew a quilt.
In three years, when it is Raegan's turn, I have already told Chad that we need to make plans to both be there. It was that fun!
